PHARMACY
When providers are looking for a pharmacy for a refugee patient, there are several things to consider. If the patient has a preferred pharmacy, then the provider should use that pharmacy. When there is no preference, the provider should choose a pharmacy that is near to where the refugee resides (Bethel, 2012). Many refugees do not have transportation, so if it is within walking distance or a short taxi ride, this is preferred. Additionally, if a pharmacy has the capacity to communicate with the refugee, or is experienced in filling prescriptions for refugees, the provider may want to utilize that pharmacy. Clear directions should be provided to the patient to the best of the provider’s ability. Additional assistance can go a long way to ensuring that the refugee's prescription needs are met. Whenever possible, simplify the process of acquiring the prescription for the patient, and explain the prescription several times if necessary. Providers should network with pharmacies and establish relationships with those pharmacies that are especially competent in filling prescriptions for culturally diverse patients. Utilize the interpreter for explanation of prescribed medications. Have them provide interpreted and translated instructions. Some patients may prefer a written prescription over a called in or electronic prescription.
